The Small Farm Animals
The bands roots
go back 10 years. Aidas B., Steve and Zilvinas Bubelis (a well known
singer from Lithuania) got together to play at a friends birthday party.
The reception was enthusiastic and they were asked to play at various
functions throughout the Northeast for the next several years. The music
was mostly originals written by Zilvinas and was played on acoustic
instruments. The group disbanded when Zilvinas moved to Chicago.
A few months later Steve and Aidas got together again to jam, but this
time they pulled out the electrics and plugged in. That night they rediscovered
their love for blues and rock and started jamming once a week. A few
months later they were joined by Tom. During this time, jams were purely
an excuse to drink some beers and make some noise. Songs included blues,
rock, instrumentals and original material written by Steve. They were
having a great time, but the group was in dire need of a drummer (the
drum machine just wasn’t cutting it anymore). They were at a loss
as to who to get to play with them. The criteria were pretty tough.
They wanted someone who could keep a beat, but also someone who was
fun to hang around with. You have to admit, despite its shortcomings,
a drum machine never complains and it drinks ZERO beer. Nevertheless,
they found the answer in Aidas Z. (son of Aidas B.) who joined the group
when he came home, from the University of Hartford. Not only was he
great to hang around with, was great on the skins, but he drastically
reduced the average age of the band! This configuration jammed for a
year or so until they realized, despite their total lack of purpose
and ambition, all of a sudden they knew enough songs to maybe play a
show. They kept their eyes open and finally were asked to play at a
private party. Needing a name for the gig, they came up with “Small
Farm Animals” (aka SFA) named, in part, after a friends love of
cooking up small farm animals in a pit behind his house. Domingo sat
in on the session and has subsequently played with SFA at many concerts,
adding a whole new dimension to their sound.
